As you get older, you may notice flat, dark patches appearing on your face and body.

These may be a form of hyperpigmentation known as age spots, solar lentigines, sun spots or liver spots.

They’re usually flat and can look brown, grey, or black. Age spots aren’t usually anything to worry about, but they could be something you want to treat. Like treating wrinkles, managing pigmentation is a long-term effort, and we would be happy to guide you through the process.

What causes age spots?

Sunspots are caused by uneven melanin production in your skin, usually caused by sun exposure or hormonal changes. Exposure to UV rays can damage your skin cells, causing them to produce increased melanin in an uneven fashion, resulting in patches of pigmentation on the surface of the skin.

Sunspots are generally more noticeable in older people, as it can take many years for the damage to show on the skin. You’re also at higher risk of developing age spots if you’ve used tanning beds frequently.

We offer several treatments that can fade and help prevent sunspots to help create a clearer and more even skin tone.

At Oatlands Aesthetics, we offer detailed skin assessments to determine that we are able to safely and effectively treat the lesion. We may advise you to see a dermatologist prior to treatment if we feel that the lesion may require alternative treatment or if we suspect that it could be problematic in the future.

Always consult your GP first if you are worried about a lesion. Common symptoms to watch out for are crusting, bleeding, rapidly growing in size, and uneven colouring.
