Dark patches on your face and body are likely to be a form of hyperpigmentation.

While harmless, they can be frustrating if you’d like a more even skin tone.

Here at Oatlands Aesthetics, we offer a selection of procedures that can safely and effectively fade hyperpigmentation over the course of treatments.

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is caused by increased melanin production. Whilst melanin gives your skin its pigment, it can, on occasion, overproduce and cause an uneven skin tone.

There are three main forms which are triggered by different factors. These are:

  • Age Spots (also known as sun spots, solar lentigines, liver spots)
Look like large freckles and are more common in older people who’ve had increased sun exposure.
  • Melasma (also known as chloasma or the ‘mask of pregnancy’)
Typically activated by hormonal changes (particularly pregnancy, birth control pills and HRT), melasma presents as large dark patches that are more spread out across the forehead, upper lip, cheeks, nose and chin.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
Usually found where the skin has previously been damaged or inflamed (acne is a common cause), leaving it darkened after the area has healed.

Like most skin conditions, sun exposure can worsen hyperpigmentation so it’s important to always use SPF and limit your time spent in the sun.
