You may have areas of the face that are ‘prone’ to blackhead formation, or you may occasionally have a blackhead appear from time to time. Failure to remove makeup daily or cleanse the skin properly are major culprits of blackheads. Excessive exfoliation can irritate the skin and lead to increased oil production, potentially worsening blackheads.
If you are suffering from blackheads that are not responding to at-home product regimes, we are here to help.
Blackheads are small bumps on the skin’s surface that form when a clog or blockage develops in the opening of a hair follicle. On your face, each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that creates oil. This natural oil, known as sebum, is produced by the body to keep your skin soft and moisturised.
However, an overproduction of sebum and other debris, such as dead skin cells, can collect in these openings, forming bumps known as comedones and can appear as dark dots known as blackheads. They are usually concentrated on the nose and chin but can appear on areas of the body where oil production is heightened, such as the chest, neck and back.
It can be tempting to try and squeeze blackheads to remove the build-up, but this can lead to acne scarring. It’s best to avoid squeezing and find a safe and effective treatment instead, with blackheads, prevention is key!
